MELANIE
SHERI HENDY Melanie was well educated. She attended Los Angeles Union Academy (now Los Angeles Adventist Academy) and graduated from the eighth grade in 1992. In 1996, she graduated from Manual Arts High School. She also attended Compton Community College and received a Certificate in Child Development. Melanie was devoted to her family: She was the rowdy leader of all - her sister, her brother, her cousins, and her friends; she kept them all laughing most of the time. She thought she was actually the mother of her older siblings, Edwin and Terri. She made it her business to keep them in line. As soon as each of her nieces, Jazzmine, Evelynna, and Kamare were born, Melanie pulled them under her wing and she alternately spoiled and mothered them with great love. Melanie was very close to her sister and brother, and she could be found spending her days alternately laughing and bullying them. Melanie was a Social Diva. Her presentation was always sharp, hair and nails just so. She was presented to society as a debutant under the leadership of the late Geneva Hutchinson, and was voted second runner-up in her year at the Alexis Club. She was adored by her long-time companion, Robert Pfitzner, who remained by her side throughout the last ten years of her life. Unlike some of her generation, Melanie believed in working. She was employed by Atlantic Express, a school bus company, where she was one of their best drivers. On her route, she drove disabled and handicapped children, and she was well respected by her co-workers and supervisors. Melanie was a fighter to the end. In late June of this year, Melanie developed endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart, which destroyed one of her valves. She slipped into a coma on July 7th and was rushed into surgery to repair her heart. On July 8th far too soon, Melanie left this world, where she will be truly missed. Most of all, Melanie was loved. She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn. She is survived by her father Terrence, Sister Terri, her brothers, Edwin, Victor (of Belize), and Brandon (Jiles); her closest cousins, Timothy Eubanks and Sandra Durant; her aunts, Pearlean Durant, Ruby Jiles, Hadie and Mihethbell Hendy, and Bonnie Eubanks; her uncles Elston and Owen Hendy, Carl Jiles, Robert, and McElwain Eubanks; and a host of other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
